Actual Watts

The first thing to note in the comparison table is the actual watts of each grow light.

Knowing the actual watts ( the amount of watts the light consumes ) of the grow light gives you an easy way to calculate the size of grow light your require.

As you can see, the Viparspectra has significantly more power than the Phlizon (269w vs 130w) even though they are both named “600w led grow light”. This is why you should always compare the power of grow lights using actual watts instead of looking at the lights name.

Each cannabis plant you grow requires roughly 1square foot of space ( if growing in soil )

And each square foot of grow space requires roughly 32 -50 actual watts ( I recommend 50w for optimal results )

Therefore, the Viparspectra 600w grow light will grow up to 4 or 5 plants (269 actual watts divided by 50 = 5.38 ) while the Roleadro 300w would be good for 2-3 plants (130 actual watts divided by 50 = 2.6 )

HPS Equivalent

The HPS equivalent value is usually provided by grow light manufacturers.

This is only really helpful if you have previously grow with HPS lighting and should be taken with a grain of salt.

More often than not, grow light manufacturers will just make this up, so you should use the actual watts ( true watts ) method above when considering the power of the light.

PAR Output

PAR output is the most important value you should be looking for from your grow light, as it’s the measure of the actual wavelengths that plants use to grow.

For optimal growth during the flowering stage, we want to see at least 700 umols/m/2 at 18″

Due to the fact that it outputs pretty much double the actual watts over the other grow lights in this comparison, it’s no wonder the Viparspeta 600w comes out on top here with 750mols/m/2 while the Roleadro 300w produces a respectable 453umols with only 130w of power.

Although it has a well balanced full spectrum ( including IR ) it does not include UV. I like to see UV is grow lights as it has shown to be beneficial to THC production, making your buds more potent.

Warranty

If I’m buying anything electric online, I like to have a solid warranty to go with it.

There’s a bit of debate in the cannabis community about how useful this feature is.

Veg and bloom switches are basically two switches on the back of the light that allow you to optimise the lights intensity for the veg and bloom stage.

Some growers ignore them and keep both on all the time, the idea being that more light = better results.

However, I disagree.

I’ve experimented with them and found that I didn’t see any difference in yield or potency when vegging with the boom switch turned on as well.

That means I was simply wasting energy which came back to bite me in the form of my electricity bill.

So I now keep the bloom switch turned off until flowering.

The most important bit of equipment in your grow room is your light.

Why? Light is your plants food, you need to feed your plants high quality food for them to produce high quality yields.

Good LED grow lights are now considered the best lighting option by most growers due to their energy efficiency, durability and full spectrum.

However, with all the options and technical jargon, finding the right light for your project can feel a little overwhelming.

Today, we’re going to answer a question we often get asked…

What Size LED Grow Light Do I Need?

To work out what size of LED grow light you need, you first need to calculate the exact size of your grow space.

The Size Of Your Grow Space

When growing cannabis, a good rule of thumb is to use a minimum of 50 watts of light per square foot of grow space. We want to flood our plants with light ( food ) so that they have lots of energy to produce big potent buds.

Therefore, we need to calculate the square footage ( length x width ) of our grow space. We’ll then multiply this number by 50w to give us the rough wattage of light we require.

EXAMPLE: I have a grow space that is 2ft long and 3ft wide. This gives me a square foot grow space of 6 ( 2ft x 3ft ). I then multiply this number by 50w, which gives me 300w. Therefore, in this example, I would require an LED grow light that was at least 300w.

How Many Plants Can I Grow?

In general, each cannabis plant you grow requires at least 1sq ft of space. After germination, I like to pot one plant in a large 5 gallon fabric container, which has a diameter of roughly 1 sq foot. My plant will stay in this pot until it flowers.

This allows the plant to grow big and strong without other plants or tent walls obstructing its progress. Using this as a guideline, I would be able to grow between 1-6 plants in my example above.

Most LED grow lights usually be able to cover about 1- 6 plants. If you want to grow any more plans than this, I’d purchase multiple lights to hang side by side ( called daisy chaining ) to cover the canopy and ensure each plant is getting enough light.

The table below shows how the power of grow light you require increases with the size of your grow space. I’ve also included how many plants each size of grow light will be adequate for.

Note: The values above are for flowering. During the vegetation stage, you will require around half the power ( 25w ) Most good quality LED grow lights come with “Veg and Bloom switches” that optimise the lights intensity for the vegetation and flowering stages.

Understanding PAR Output

You’ve probably heard about PAR. In simple terms, It’s the part of the light spectrum that your plants use for photosynthesis. So It’s a pretty big deal. The higher the PAR output of your light, the more edible light your plants receive. Take a look at the table below for the optimal ranges of PAR for each stage of your plans life:

Ideally, you want to pick a grow light that outputs PAR in the ranges above. This pretty much rules out any LED grow light below 300w, as they simply don’t have enough power to generate the required levels of PAR. That said, keep in mind that these are optimal levels of PAR. Using a grow light that has less PAR output than these ranges will not be a disaster, you just won’t max out the potential of your plant.

  • The investment also doubles in case you are going for a grow light with active cooling and exhaust system. An active cooling system is different from that of a passive cooling system regarding operational frequency. An active system continuously pumps out warm air and sucks in cold air while the passive system only starts operating only when things get too hot!
  • The LED cycle of a grow lamp directly dictates what the apparatus is going to cost. Indoor growing of flowering and vegetable/fruit plants need LED growing light capable of giving out full cycle light (or full spectrum light)
  • Grow lights that are programmable to give out separate wavelengths and intensities of lights essential for different stages in the plant’s life, viz. blooming and flowering would cost more.
  • In case the onboard chips and internal circuitry allow the user to program the lighting mechanism to give out separate lumen value and intensities of light for different plant species, the cost of the same is meant to go up.
