VIPARSPECTRA Reflector Series 300w LED Grow Light Review
The ongoing legalization of marijuana means that more and more people are growing weed at home. LED lights are the preferred choice for many in-home growers because of their affordability and versatility… but there are so many to choose from!
Luckily, we’ve tested the best LED grow lights on the market and reviewed them in detail to make your decision easier!
Today we’re going to be looking at the VIPARSPECTRA Reflector Series 300w LED Grow Light (V300 for short). In this review, we’re going to cover:
- Features & Build Quality
- Color Spectrum/PAR Value
Heads up! This article is a little on the long side. If you’re short on time, here’s a quick overview for you:
Here’s what we love most about this light:
The VIPARSPECTRA Reflector Series 300w LED grow light comes with all the power and features we’ve come to love about the brand. Specifically, we love that it has:
- High-quality construction
- Low heat levels
- High energy efficiency
- Ability to daisy chain multiple lights
We really like this LED grow light… we even ranked it in our Best Light for Growing Weed in 2018 guide. It took home the top spot for our Best Value Grow Light category.
Who is this light best for?
The VIPARSPECTRA Reflector Series 300w LED has everything a new grower needs to feed a plant all the way from germination to flowering. Because of it’s easy daisy-chain ability and low cost, this light is also a great choice for the mid-size grower who wants to hang multiple lights side-by-side to cover a larger area.
There are many growers who would benefit from this light, but we think it’s best for:
- Small to mid-sized grow operations
- 2-4 plants at a time
- Beginner and budget growers who don’t want to sacrifice quality
This light has absolutely everything you need. Unlike some lights that require a separate cord for daisy chaining, the V300 connects to itself using the included power cord! With this purchase, you get:
- V300 LED Light
- Hanging Kit
- User Instructions
- 6ft Power Cord
For indoor growers, one of the biggest challenges can be managing the heat output in their grow space. LEDs are the preferred choice for many simply because they run much cooler than their HID/HPS equivalents.
The VIPARSPECTRA Reflector Series 300w LED is an excellent choice if you’re concerned about heat in your grow space. Aluminum cooling heat sinks and high-speed fans work together so that this light runs an amazing 70% cooler than comparable HID lights.
A budget grower should always consider the cost of running a grow light in addition to its purchase price. Fluorescent and HID/HPS lights are generally expensive to run, while LEDs are known for being more efficient options.
The VIPARSPECTRA Reflector Series 300w LED grow light can replace up to 250 watts in an HID, but only uses an average of 136 watts, so you can rest assured that your energy bill won’t spike significantly. It is recommended that this light have at least 6 hours of “sleep” time per day in order to maximize its lifespan.
This light comes with a great feature that allows you to hang multiple lights ( daisy chain ) beside each other while only requiring a single power chord.
Because of the very low cost of this light, you can invest in two or three of these for less than the cost of a single more expensive light. If you want to increase the PAR and coverage area for your grow, we recommend hanging two or three of these side-by-side.
Tip: Using a mylar-lined grow tentcan increase the PAR Output of your light by up to 25%, and daisy-chaining will also provide a boost to PAR. Keep these factors in mind when deciding how high to hang your light.
At this price point, many competitor lights start skimping on the amount of healthy light they provide. It is really impressive to see the VIPARSPECTRA Reflector Series 300w LED providing a full, 12-band spectrum of LEDs, including Infrared.
Plants absorb some colors of light better than others. Each band of color in the V300 is specifically chosen because it is the absolute best light for a marijuana plant.
When a seed is first sprouting, it is drawn toward light… specifically, it seeks red spectrum and far red (Infrared) light bands. If those infrared light waves are far away, the plant will stretch to reach it.
This is why outdoor cannabis plants can grow to be 7’ or taller… they stretch toward the sunlight (which is roughly 55% non-visible Infrared waves). Indoor growers generally don’t have enough vertical space for a plant that tall, which is where Infrared LEDs come in.
Having the V300 means your plant won’t need to stretch as much to get the Infrared wavelengths it craves, so it will maintain a better height for an indoor grow.
PAR is the measurement that tells us how much edible light our plants are receiving. As your plant grows, the amount of PAR it needs increases… seedlings like a PAR between 200 and 400, while flowering buds need between 600 and 900.
The PAR Output of your light is affected by several things:
- The distance between your light and your plant.
- Whether the plant is directly under the light or off to one side.
- Mylar-lined grow tents increase PAR by up to 25%
- Daisy chained lights overlap coverage to increase PAR.
If you want to get a precise measurement of your light’s PAR, we recommend investing in a handy PAR meter. Luckily, VIPARSPECTRA has given us an outline with detailed PAR info for those of us who don’t want to do the work.
At 24” high, the PAR at the center point of the light is 300, which is perfect for a seedling or clone. You can start your light at this height and move it closer as your plant grows. The closer your light is to the plant, the higher the PAR will be directly under it.
This is a relatively small light, so it’s not going to cover a large grow tent by itself. At 24” ( the vegetation stage ) this light will cover a 2’ by 2’ grow area. During the flower stage, we recommend keeping it between 12” and 18” from the plant, and it should cover an area about 1.5’ by 1.5’.
Adding a second or third light to your grow space can increase the total coverage area significantly, and it’s easy to afford extras since these lights are so affordable.
If you like this light but need something with more power, check out its big sister, the VIPARSPECTRA Reflector Series 600w LED. The larger model has twice the wattage power and a few bonus features that can really take your grow space to the next level. The V600 also took the top spot in our Best Light for Growing Weed in 2018 review.
VIPARSPECTRA offers a standard 30-day satisfaction guarantee and 3-year local warranty, and are known for providing excellent customer service.
We can’t think of a single reason not to recommend it. We love it, and we’re sure that you will too!
