Shengsite 50w LED Grow Light

Let’s face it: not everyone can afford a fancy, elaborate grow space in the beginning.  Many new growers choose to go small and utilize existing spaces (like closets) to reduce cost.  You can also cut costs by choosing a budget LED grow light, but it’s important to know what features to look for.

There are a ton of grow lights on the market… HID, HPS, fluorescents, CFL, LED… it can be very overwhelming to know where to start. Here at GreenBudGuru, we do most of the hard work for you! We research and feature the best LED grow lights on the market, so that you can easily choose the one that works best for you!

You read that right… we only feature LEDs here, and there’s a good reason for that. From our research, LED grow lights are the most energy efficient, the easiest to use, and the healthiest for cannabis plants.  They’re also generally very affordable, which is awesome for budget growers!

Today we’re focusing on a light that will not break your budget but will still offer an excellent start for your cannabis plants.  The Shengsite 50w LED grow light is perfect for the beginner grower.  In this review, we’ll cover:

  • Features & Build Quality
  • Color Spectrum/PAR Value
  • Coverage
  • Warranty

Quick review

Heads up! This article is a full review, that will go over all aspects of the light in detail. If you’re only wanting a quick overview, here you go:

Here’s what we love most about this light:

The Shengsite 50w LED grow light has a lot appeal for growers on a limited budget.  Specifically, we love that it’s:

  • Easy to hang in small spaces.
  • Extremely affordable.
  • Just the right ratio of red light to blue light.

We love this light so much that it won the top spot in our Budget Grow Light category for our Best Light for Growing Weed in 2018 review.

Who is this light best for?

This LED is perfect for the closet grower.  Because of the hanging hook, it fits ideally on a clothing rack in a closet space! We recommend the Shengsite 50w LED for anyone who plans to grow one seed at a time and has a very limited budget.

It’s important to note a couple of things about this grow light.  It’s not going to be strong enough to last through the flowering stage. The PAR output (discussed below) is too low to encourage high yields, so you’ll need to invest in a different light when it comes time to flower your plant.

For a budget grower, however, that’s actually a good thing!  If you invest in this smaller LED upfront, you can start a seed and have a few months preparation to save for a good flowering light. Once you have both lights, you can always be vegging one plant and flowering another, which keeps your harvest times close together.

Features & Build

Small space growers love a light that doesn’t take up too much space.  That’s why we love the Shengsite 50w LED grow light! At just over 1 foot in diameter, this small and lightweight LED can fit in almost any grow space.  And because it weighs only 2.1 pounds, it doesn’t need reinforced beams or supports to hold it up.

Shengsite also prides itself on the heat dissipation of this LED. The plastic construction and built-in heat sinks ensure that your plant won’t receive too much hot air from the light, so you won’t have to worry as much about light burn.

3:1 ratio of red to blue LEDs

Red and blue lights are the most beneficial and healthiest for cannabis plants. However, they aren’t of equal value to a seedling.

When a cannabis plant first sprouts from its shell, it seeks out red light and stretches to find some.  If enough red wavelengths are accessible, the plant won’t need to stretch and will stay low and thick.  If it has trouble finding the red lights, it will stretch taller and thinner.

For most in-home growers, height is an issue and keeping plants short can be very beneficial. That’s why we love seeing the 3:1 ratio of red to blue lights on the Shengsite 50w LED.  With this ratio, your seedlings will get both the necessary colors and enough red light to stay short and save you vertical space.

PAR Output

Over time, there have been a lot of theories about how to increase cannabis yields and potency, and many of them have to do with lighting.  You’ve probably heard people talk about luman, wattage, and PAR values.

In general, the PAR values are the most important since they tell us exactly how much healthy, edible light your plant is receiving.  PAR measurements account for the distance your plant is from the light, and whether the plant is directly under the light or off to one side.

If you want to be very specific about PAR you can easily invest in a PAR meter, but those are generally very expensive.  Thankfully, to save you money, Shengsite has provided us with some basic information about this LEDs PAR output.

Seedlings and clones need a lower PAR, generally between 200 and 400.  Considering the image above, you’ll want to keep the Shengsite 50w LED grow light roughly 8-20 inches from the top leaves on your plant.  Once your plant is more mature and growing stronger, you’ll want to invest in a second light that can take it through harvest.

Pro tip: using a mylar-lined grow tent is a great way to increase the PAR your plant receives. The reflective aspect of the mylar can increase PAR by up to 25%.

There isn’t a lot of good information about the coverage area for this LED, so we had to do some digging to find the answer.  According to Shengsite, this LED can cover up to a 3′ by 3′ space, but that seems unrealistic for anyone who needs a decent PAR Output.

With a little research, we feel confident that this light at 20″ above your plant should cover about a 1′ x 1′ space.  While that might seem small at first, it’s really perfect for seedlings and clones.  If you’re planning to grow one seed at a time, this coverage area will be more than sufficient.

Need something different?

While we love the Shengsite 50w LED grow light, we know that it won’t meet everyone’s needs.  If you’re looking for a light that doesn’t hang from a hook, we recommend the Roleadro 45w Panel LED, which took 3rd place in our Budget Grow Light category, only losing out on 5 watts of power.

Our Verdict

The Shengsite 50w LED grow light is perfect for a first-time indoor grower who is starting off with a limited budget. If  you’re looking for a light that will be perfect for seedlings and clones, look no further.  And because of its unique hanging design, you can utilize existing closet space if you don’t have a formal grow room.

This light won’t carry your plant from seed to harvest, so you’ll need to budget for a second light once your plant gets older. We recommend the VIPARSPECTRA Reflector Series 300w LED grow light to take your plant into harvest.
